Masoumeh Velasquez, 19. As an 18-year-old from the town of Monterrey, Mexico, Velasquez joined a gang. She was later convicted for her role and is serving a 10-year prison term.

Elias Garcia Pimentel, 31. In 2013, Pimentel was charged and jailed for attempting to join the Taliban in Afghanistan. The former Marine who had been deported from Turkey three times said he was “in hiding” because the war there was becoming too violent.

Julian Speroni, 36. Speroni, now aged 39, was sent back to Philadelphia in 2014 after he was arrested for trying to join the Taliban. His father, who works at a poultry plant in Arizona, said it was the fear of violence that scared him away. “I’ve already lost so much money through this, so I don’t want to be involved in any more. That was a little too much.”

Elon Williams, 27. In 2012, Williams was released from prison after serving six years for burglary, theft and drug possession. He was charged with trying to join the Taliban and has been in the US for almost six years.

Sergio Gonzales-Ramos, 31. Like his son, Gonzales-Ramos was one of nine men on the plane with his wife and two sons on 18 November 2012, when an airliner operated by Greek Airlines crashed into the ground near Larnaca, Cyprus. His brother-in-law, Jose Gonzales, was on the plane and was killed. Like Sergio, Gonzales was born in Honduras, lived in the US for several years before returning there and has three children.
